Maybe the mail() function in php is blocked on your server?

my host said it wasn't blocked and I should try to use STMP... not sure how to go about doing that.

Normally (I think) the php mail() function uses smtp.
Is it possible to send any mail through scripts?
Try to install any newsletter scripts and try to use it.

The php mail() fuction uses the sendmail feature on a Linux/Unix box. I'm not sure how it works on a IIS box.

The latency could be a large queue on the server. But if they told you to use SMTP, they might have IIS. ewwwwww :)

Good luck dude!

Big problem. Gmail is marking all activation emails as SPAM and automatically moving it to the SPAM box.

You just need to mark it as "No spam".
