Being penalised by Search Engines ?

Postby Arthur » Sat Feb 22, 2003 8:01 am

My site has been removed from search engine listings since I installed MyRed. I previously had a number 3 listing for my search terms. This may not relate to MyRED ?

Could it be that sites using MyRed script are penalised by search engines for redirecting. This is apparently a common mistake for site owners trying to get more listings on search engines. They create many extra pages purely for that purpose, all they do is redirect visitors to the real homepage.

If you think my concern is valid may I suggest a fix for your comments please.

If I rename (MyRed) index.php to main.php and change the last line in .htaccess to:
DirectoryIndex main.php

And also now rename my original default page to index.php

This should still work, Yes ? (of course I would tell myred admin the homepage is now called index.php) but search engines may still detect that the default homepage (now named "main.php") is actually redirecting to index.php ?

Do I sound confused, good, I am, can you explain how this works?

Changes made so far so good

Forgot to mention I would also need to change first lines in .htaccess to now read

ErrorDocument 404 /main.php
ErrorDocument 401 /main.php

So I have made all these changes and it all works fine, my default homepage is now called index.php AND when the script runs main.php it redirects to index.php

BUT I am still unsure if search engines will detect redirection ?

You mean self replicating webpages, don't you?
The redirection scripts have nothing to do with these kind of websites.
I can't explain why your site isn't listed in the search engines anymore.
And yes, the scripts should work the way you modified them.

False Alarm. Stop Panicking

Postby Arthur » Sun Mar 30, 2003 5:39 am

Hi, I just wanted to clarify that the original problem of losing my listings on the search engines DOES NOT have anything to do with MyRed.

My Site is back at number three for the search terms "free weblogs" I had previously and WITH MyRed working perfectly. No idea why it dissappeared for a while ?

I still think SOME search engines do penalise sites for redirects which use the META TAG REFRESH EQUIV=etc but MyRed redirection is all done inside .htaccess

Thanks for a top FREE program.

Yes, I could imagine this.
Are free weblogs still so popular as they were last year?
