how to stop phishing?

Postby www.hm » Tue Feb 15, 2005 2:29 pm

Hello,

I've had several consecutive problems with people abusing my site for phishing (imitating ligitamate websites). Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to prevent this? can anyone think of a way to filter signups? I ve thought of a few:

check target site content for key words,
prevent signup of suspect names,
need for user to register (checkable!) personal details,
not do signup under free email account (yahoo hotmail)

Can anyone think of anymore - or modifications to the ones I've suggested? they need to be achievable and realistic.

I'm tired of suspending signups!

You use 1.2 dont you ? I cant rember if 1.2 does this but 1.4 you can turn off auto sign up so you will activate the domain if its ok, if not you just delete it.

1.4 has keyword and banned word checking

thats true, I can see a lot of useful improvements in 1.4 but I think its probably a little late to prevent possible fraudulent signups from people who want the service. I was back up for 2weeks without signups and I got kicked from the new server! people must have dormant accounts ready to start re-offending.

Not sure what to do now, didn't foresee the growth that I've had over the months and probably havent been policing accounts enough.

Any recommendations? I never wanted to charge for my services (i dont think there'd be any interest anyway) and always hated it myself when free services I'd been using had done it in the past but I can see any other reliable enough way to certify users!

Any suggestions would be invaluable!

Might be worth upgrading to 1.4.

In the admin side you can list all the signups so could search for any bad looking ones and delete them and also prune any old accounts that havnt been used for xx days.

Plus you could set it on manual approve for a while.

Scooby, nice new template! - It's probably been that was a while now - Had my head in the sand(or s***) a lot lately!

So I've patched together a bunch of scripts to queue the signups in my admin panel ready for my approval. Very time consuming way to do it but its better than being taken off the net every fortnight!!
