Script installed. Now what about this wildcard business?

Postby Hello » Sat Jan 08, 2005 8:28 pm

Hi,

Script installed great, no problem. But this script requires wildcard subdomains, which i'm almost positive my webhost provider allows, but what's the first thing i should do now?

i can access the admin and register files no problem, even create a user which i called "test". but "test.mydomain.com" doesn't work, and i'm assuming it's because i don't have wildcards setup.

How do I setup wildcard subdomains? I apologize if this is a frustrating newbie question, but I could really use some help here.

-thanks in advance.

Unless you have root access you cant do it.

Just ask your host to enable wildcard dns for the domain using a virtual server.

thanks for the reply.

My host has now setup wildcarded subdomains for my host! Now the only problem is when i type in the test address (test.mydomain.com) I get a cpanel page that says:

There is no website configured at this address.

Hmm... well, getting closer, but now what?

again wildcard questions

Postby eure » Tue Feb 01, 2005 11:28 am

Hi everyone,

Could someone explain how the wildcards are working?
My serverprovider doesn`t even know how to set up wildcards.

My host provides wildcards for sure, see below what i have to adjust:

Host (% wildcard is allowed):
(what does this mean? percent or numbers?)

I really appreciate your help and explanation how to proceed.

Thanks

Eure

Host (% wildcard is allowed)

That looks like you are looking at the mysql its nothing todo with mysql

Wildcard dns is made up of two settings.

1 is an A recored in the dns zone like *.A.server_ip

2. is a entry in the httd conf file as a virtaul server for your domain only the server people can set this up.

Its been covered on these forums loads of times, and the script will not work without it.

Install the script on all accounts?

Postby eure » Tue Feb 01, 2005 1:18 pm

Thanks Scooby,

Thats very helpful.
I intend to offer 10 different domains.
like
www.test.aktiv.ws
www.test.hier.ws
etc.

Basicquestion:
Do i have to install the script on all 10 accounts or just on the mainaccount?

I have a reseller package and no problem to have many domains hosted.

Thanks

Nope

Just one install of the script is needed.

Then park the other domains on the main domain , and then go into the admin on mylounge and you add the new domains there.

But you will need the wildcard virtual server set up for all domains you add and the wildcard in the dns zone

==================================

ok, I installed the script on the main domian, parked the other domains on the the maindomian and added all domains to the mylounge admin area.

My provider asked me this question:
Which domain do you want the wildcard on?

I told him on my main domian. Is this correct?
Does he have to do it also on the other domians?

By the way, is anyone using crazyhost?
If yes it would be even easier to explain what else i have to pay attention
and what adjustments have to be made.

I have WHM access. I`m sure it will run soon, anyway i appreciate your help very much.

As scoobs said above you have even quoted it :)

But you will need the wildcard virtual server set up for all domains you add and the wildcard in the dns zone.

If you have access to whm you can do the wildcard part 1 of above in the dns zone the A record with server ip.

Again each domain will need this doing

Thanks Guest,

Hopefully the last question:
My domains are pointing to my host (of course) but is it neccessary to add an extra hosting account for each domain-except the main domain where the script is running?

Right now i did not create an extra account but parked all other domains on top of the main domain and a DNS for all domains was created.

Thanks

Eure

Yep thats all you do is park the domains on top of the main domain.

You can have them in there own accounts if you want but the first option is the easy one :)

Thanks for your help, it works already fine.

Next step is: i would like to have the 3 different languages on my website.
3 flags are on my homepage already and all 3 languages open ok.

Problem is: only the language, where the index.php is in the mainfolder is creating working customer domains. The other ones also create the customerdomains but when i open it for testing it redirects me to the mainroot. myred/register.php

Each language has an extra folder and an extra database within 1 account.

this one works: myred/index.php
this one does not: DE/myred/index.php
this one does not: FR/myred/index.php

Any idea how this must be set up or do i have to have 3 different maindomains (accounts) if using 3 diff. languages?

Thanks
