Wildcard DNS used by hosting company - workarounds?

It's not difficult to install myLounge Redirection, but sometimes it's quite tricky. Post your questions in here.

Wildcard DNS used by hosting company - workarounds?

Postby ukbx » Sun Jun 22, 2003 2:14 pm

Hi, May I first of all congratulate the author of this script on an excellent piece of work, it's far more comprehensive than its competitors.

I came here before trying to install and read about wildcard DNS etc and tested to see if we had it (them?), we did. So I uploaded the script, following all the setup instructions carefully and it worked like a dream. The only problem was that the test sub-domain didn't map to any page - we got a 404 error. In the meantime my hosting company replied to my enquiry about wildcard DNS to say that we do have them, but that they are used by them with their control panel to allow us to map any sub-directories to a sub-domain ie an images folder could become http://images.domain.com

Now this is clearly preventing MyLounge from working for us and I wonder if there's any workaround you could suggest. One option I think I could use is to purchase  a perl script which does the same sort of thing but creates http://domain.com/subdomain redirections, then manually go into our own hosting company's control panel and map that subdomain to enable http://subdomain.domain.com (I'm not even sure if this will work and would really like a workaround so that we could use MyLounge because it is far, far superior to anything else on the market, free or otherwise).

Can anyone suggest a workaround?

Thank you

I would like to echo the congrats on a wonderful program!

In my case, my hosting provider told me that they can enable WILDCARDED DOMAINS only on domains that had a dedicated IP. This is a bummer because on the shared server that I am on, there are no more IPs available. So we had to move the domain to another server where I was issued a dedicated IP and now everything works great :D .

The sucky thing is of course....moving domains to this other server, waiting for DNS propagation, then having various domains hosted on different servers. (a problem for me, in my "blondness")

IF SOMEONE COMES UP WITH A WORKAROUND, I WILL DANCE AT YOUR WEDDING (or something)
Thanks!

Sorry for the late response, but I'm afraid, that there is no workaround.
This mapping to subdirectories is the most useless thing I ever saw (except of some people I know  ).
Now you won't dance, would you?
